Nutrition is very important for older adults

A healthy and balanced diet should be consumed during this time so that your body gets the nutrients it needs. Nutrients are microscopic particles of food that perform essential functions in our bodies. Nutrients that provide energy to the body include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Vitamins and minerals prevent body diseases.

Good nutrition is important for everyone, no matter what your age. It gives you energy and helps control your weight. It is also needed to help prevent certain diseases such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers in older adults.

As you age, your body and life change, and so does what you need to stay healthy. For example, you may need fewer calories, but you need to get enough nutrients. Sometimes some older adults may need more protein.

As you age, certain changes can occur that can make it difficult for you to eat healthy. This includes your changes. For example:

  • Home life, such as suddenly being alone or having trouble getting around
  • Health, which may make it difficult for you to cook or eat
  • Medicines can change the taste of food, dry out your mouth, or take away your appetite
  • You may not have as much money for food
  • Sense of smell and taste may be reduced
  • Trouble chewing or swallowing your food

To stay healthy as you age you should:

It is necessary to eat foods that give you a lot of nutrients without a lot of extra calories, eg

  • Fruits and vegetables (choose a colorful variety)
  • Whole grains, such as oatmeal, whole wheat bread, and brown rice
  • Fat-free or low-fat milk and cheese, or soy or rice milk, which are essential for vitamin d and calcium
  • Seafood, lean meat, poultry and eggs
  • Beans, nuts and seeds should be eaten in ethnic foods
  • Avoid empty calories. These are foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients, such as chips, candy, baked goods, soda, and alcohol.
  • Choose foods low in cholesterol and fat. Try to avoid saturated and trans fats in particular. Saturated fat is usually fat that comes from animals. Trans fats are processed fats in stick margarine and vegetable shortening.
  • Drink enough water so that you don't get dehydrated. Some people lose their sense of thirst as they age. And some medications can make it even more important to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Be physically active. If you start to lose your appetite, exercise can help you feel less hungry.
